Advancing High-Speed Centrifuge Technology for University Laboratories

Published Category Company News Updated 2026-10-21

In August 2023, MRK Instruments took part in analytica China in Shanghai, showing its latest high-speed centrifuges and supporting solutions. Domestic alternatives for university laboratories were the focus.

What university laboratories actually need

The biggest difference between a university laboratory and industrial or clinical settings is that one machine serves two audiences: undergraduate teaching demands safety, ease of use and batch operation, while research groups want headroom in speed, capacity and temperature control. The two pull configuration in opposite directions.

The usual mistake is buying the top configuration outright. The result: teaching sessions never use the 21,000 r/min ceiling but still carry the higher maintenance cost, while the large-capacity rotors research actually needs cannot be afforded because the budget went into the main unit.

Configuring a domestic alternative

A better structure is "core plus supplement": a benchtop high-speed unit for everyday molecular biology and cell culture work, a benchtop low-speed large-capacity unit for serum, supernatant and other high-volume handling, and a refrigerated model where temperature control is required.

Take specific models:MG 20A a benchtop large-capacity centrifuge with max. speed 21,000 r/min, max. RCF 30,430 ×g and 4 × 750 ml capacity covers both microtube high-speed work and large bottles;MH 2100R Floor-standing high-speed refrigerated units reach 21,000 r/min and 51,430 ×g with 4 × 1000 ml capacity, providing refrigerated high-speed separation;MD 550A and a benchtop low-speed unit at 6,000 r/min with 4 × 750 ml for routine high-volume separation. Three units together usually cover more real work than one fully loaded machine.

Technical progress

High-speed centrifuges concentrate their difficulty in three places: rotor material and machining accuracy, speed stability of the drive system, and the machine's dynamic balance and damping. The higher the speed, the more a tiny mass deviation in the rotor is amplified, so every high-speed rotor must be dynamically balanced individually.

MRK develops its own mechanical structure, drive and control algorithms, with patents and software copyrights to show for it; every unit is certified to IEC 61010, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2003. These are not marketing claims — they are the documents actually checked during university procurement qualification review.

One thing beyond procurement

Training is the most underestimated part of equipment management in universities. Graduate students rotate quickly and habits pass down informally from senior to junior; poor balancing, unsecured rotors and unprecooled refrigerated runs account for most early failures.

Any delivered solution should therefore include installation, commissioning and operator training, plus a written standard procedure. Service life is largely decided by habits in the first two years — that shapes the day-to-day experience more than any line on a specification sheet.
